Is God with You? Even in the Fire?

There's a kind of hard season that doesn't have a clean name.
Not a diagnosis. Not a specific loss you can point to and say, "this is why I'm struggling." Just a stretch of life that feels like heat you can't escape — pressure from every direction, and no clear door out. I've had seasons like that. Maybe you're in one right now.
And in those seasons, the question underneath everything else is usually the same one: is God even here?

Three Men Who Walked Into the Fire
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego didn't get a rescue before the fire. They got thrown into it.
They had refused to bow to a golden image, and King Nebuchadnezzar's response was to have the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and have them thrown in, still bound (Daniel 3:19–21). No last-minute miracle stopped the flames from happening. They walked directly into the fire they were afraid of.
But here's what happened next. The king looked into the furnace and said, astonished, "Didn't we tie three men and throw them into the fire? Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods" (Daniel 3:24–25).
God didn't keep them from the fire. He was in it with them.
The Promise Isn't That You'll Avoid the Fire
Isaiah 43:2 doesn't promise a life without hard seasons. It says, "When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze." Notice the wording. Not if you walk through fire. When. God isn't promising an exemption from hard seasons. He's promising His presence inside them.
I think that's actually more honest — and more comforting — than a promise of avoidance would be. Because avoidance isn't always what we get. Grief still comes. Waiting still stretches longer than we hoped. Diagnoses still happen. Marriages still go through hard seasons. And if the only promise we had was "none of this will touch you," we'd be left wondering what went wrong the moment it did.
But the promise was never that the fire wouldn't come. It was that we wouldn't walk through it alone.
Even Here, He Is Present
David wrote something similar from his own hard seasons: "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me" (Psalm 23:4). Not because the valley isn't dark. Not because nothing bad is happening. Because God is present in the middle of it.
That word "even" carries so much weight. Even here. Even in this. Even when it doesn't make sense, when the flames are real and the valley is dark and you can't see a way out yet — He is with you.

What This Looks Like Today
If you're in a season that feels like fire right now — the kind with no clean name, no clear ending in sight — I don't think you're forgotten. I think you might be exactly where Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were: still in the flames, and still not alone in them.
You don't have to wait until the fire is over to believe God is near. He's already there with you, in it, right now.
If you're walking through a season that feels like fire right now, I wrote Even Here, In the Fire — a 4-week devotional — for exactly this. [Grab it here] and let it remind you that you were never meant to walk through this alone.
